Tips
"Here is an interesting experience, from which all writers and photographers might benefit. For the last year, I've been trying to have a Canadian publication return to me a 35mm slide I sent them, to accompany an article that they requested. At the time, they were in a great hurry. Therefore, I didn't take the time to have the slide copied, but sent them a unique original, something I try very hard not to do. The editor promised several times to return the slide, but never did. I ultimately sent him, by registered mail, an invoice for the amount I expected this slide to earn in its lifetime. Some weeks later, having heard nothing, I emailed him, and told him that, if no cheque was soon forthcoming, I would be forced to advise the Travelwriter Marketletter, and other similar organizations, that their subscribers should be very wary in dealing with this publication. The word "Professional" was used liberally during the email, with intimations that this publication was not only less than professional, but lacked accountability as well. My Canadian editor called right after my email arrived, making the usual excuses about lost slides, and so on, and even commented on the fact that the slide wasn't so great(!!!!!). However, he never did say that he would not pay for the slide. "How can we resolve this problem?", he asked. Several years ago, during a similar problem with an American publication, I actually did contact the Marketletter. The editor was on the telephone to me very shortly afterward, and his cheque arrived soon after, the understanding being that I would advise the Marketletter editor at once that the problem was resolved. We have negotiating power here, fellow subscribers!" For the complete article, contact Name, Address Email address. Website address.
